Back on the road

Both the R33 and yours truly ventured out last week for some much needed breath of fresh air after spending over a month cooped up at home.

A blue C1

My car had been away for the once every 2 years shaken (MOT) inspection plus for a few touches. So on the night I went ot pick her up I went out on the wangan for a quick blast. As reported by friends and colleagues with quarantine there was alot less traffic.

It was nice to get out there after 7 weeks of being off the road. Oh how much did I miss driving.

Along with my Shaken I always do a full fluids change (Engine, diffs and gearbox oils and coolant). There is one product which I have been using which I haven't discussed here yet. As it was time for a top up of the 'good stuff' I thought I better introduce it here before I forget again.

Most RBs with their original internals are getting quite long in the tooth these days and so on top of staying on top of a religious oil change regiment I was always on the look out for other ways of protecting my engine.

2 Years ago I came across an engine oil additive called Rewitec https://www.rewitec.com/index.php/en/products.html . They are a German company who specialise in silica based metal-bonding agents. Their product was originally designed to extend the service life of wind turbine gearboxes which is the best summary of the product.

It contains a silica compound which bonds to metal surfaces to form a hard protective layer filling in any rough surfaces reducing friction on metal on metal surfaces by 33% and 20% reduction in temperature on bearings and gears. Their product is available for gearboxes, differentials and engines.

There are a number of similar products on the market, many of which are a lot less expensive. So why should you care about this product over others?

Well despite the higher price of entry due to the industrial grade composition you only need to apply it to the car's engine every 50,000 kms (1/4 of a bottle every year or 10,000 kms is recommended for those who do a lot of sports driving).

So how does it feel? The first time I put the 'good stuff' in the engine and gearbox firstly the gearbox shift action was much improved and smoother action on the syncros.

You should drive the car for at least 15 minutes at relatively high RPMs after applying it to the oil. After which you wil notice a significant improvement in smoothness of the engine. One major thing I noticed immediately was the engagement of the aircon compressor was significantly smoother now. Later once getting on the expressway and winding the engine out the engine was smoother up top as well.

For overall engine protection I do believe this product is the equivalent of protective coating the exterior of your car. I do recommend people try it out.
